Hakim's Bookstore has
been a fixture in the West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA)
community for over forty years, specializing in African American
history and literature and Arabic and Islamic books and merchandise.
In addition, we carry a wide selection of books for children of all
ages that emphasize Black Pride and self-determination.
Dawud Hakim, founder, said the idea of
starting an African American bookstore came to him in the 1950's
while he was reading a work by West Indies historian, J. A. Rogers.
The book, "The One Hundred Amazing Facts About the Negro" is
considered a black historical classic.
Following this experience, he felt his
life had been radically changed and that all people of color would
be eager as he to obtain this knowledge. He started his business
because of his devotion to education and his dedication to spreading
knowledge about African American achievement. Mr. Hakim died of
cancer in 1997. The store is now owned and operated by his daughters
Yvonne and Davita and his grand daughter Angela.
The legacy continues.
